It's time...

I've started potty training Jeriah, again. This is about the tenth time I've attempted the trek, and I've always turned back after it got rocky. This time though there will not be any turning back. Rocks, blizzard, screaming wind, whatever... I'll grit my teeth and we will get this done! Grr.

Yesterday was the first day. I put him in his big boy underwear and did not give in to his demands to put the diapers back on. He messed in his pants all day. Finally, by the end of the day, he was a little more concerned about his messes.

Today the morning was very rough. He had used up all his pants the day before so he didn't have any more to wear. After about an hour of screaming and yelling for his pants, and everything else he could think of to scream about, he finally calmed down and we took a different track. I talked to my sis-in-law and she gave me some sound advice.

  • Have a potty chart where he can add stickers whenever he goes potty in the toilet, then after a previously decided number of stickers are on the chart, he gets something he really likes. Right now, the number of stickers is 5 and if he gets 5 stickers on the chart, he can go have ice cream on a stick (a Dilly Bar).
  • When he goes potty in the toilet, give him his pants back. When he goes potty in his pants, take the pants away.

After we established that reward system, Jeriah has used the toilet twice before nap time so there are two stickers on the chart. Still some messes on the floor, but there is progress.

He's very excited about the Dilly Bar.

Good Luck! Cleaning up a few messes (or a lot) is way better than changing diapers for months!

Thanks! I need the luck. :) I'm finally at the point where I'd rather clean up messes, for however long it takes him to get the point, than keep spending mucho bucks on diapers.

Yay -- progress! No matter how small it is, remember that it's a step in the right direction. He seems to be "getting it." It will take him a bit longer to gain the coordination he needs (mind & body) but he's on his way. There will be setbacks (Noah still pees out instead of down sometimes ... drives me nuts) but it's all part of the learning process.
